I would like to add a button in the search template (the one with the top filter bar) for sort by month. Is there a place from where I can copy the code into that template? where I can find the code from the homepage search bar? I could use it from that search button into that template as well. Could you provide some guidance on going about it?

For adding theme features and functions like mentioned above, you can add the functions in your child themes functions.php file, assuming you have some experience with PHP / WordPress code customizations. If not, you can use theme customization services like WP Kraken who has already customized our theme for users requiring customizations.
